Monogamy Cabernet Sauvignon

May 31, 2013  |  Wines  |  No Comments

Wine: Monogamy Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: North Coast California
Price: $13
Enjoyed at: Home, Feb 14th, 2013 (and then again May 31st, 2013)
Purchased from: Target
Buy here

Our notes: Wow, was not expecting something this decent for the price and with such mainstream marking. Well-balanced, black cherry and cassis flavors with a pleasant, easy finish. A nice weekday Cabernet, drinkable and something that I think would be a great introduction to white wine lovers interested in flirting with reds.

Backstory: I bought this as part of my …

The Spirituality of Sigur Ros

May 1, 2013  |  Listens, Truffles  |  No Comments

I don’t know the spiritual source for the music of Sigur Ros, but I know the spiritual outcome…at least, for me – and from what I’ve been reading online, for many others.

For me, seeing Jonsi in concert was the first time I had a soul-level glimpse of what worshiping God through music could be: beautiful, transcendent, and something to look forward to.

I am often awed by things in nature, and inspired to worship God as artist and maker. I have been …

The Woman Conference: Riverview Church 2013

April 2, 2013  |  Listens, Truffles, Women's Theology  |  No Comments

Last month I did one of the most uncomfortable things I’ve ever done: taught at a conference of 500 women, teaching through a section of the Bible.

It has also turned out to be one of the best things I’ve ever done: it forced me to be obedient in ways that were difficult, put me in a situation where I was completely inadequate and insufficient, forcing me to rely on God in a way I haven’t in a while, and it gave …

Love Defined

February 13, 2013  |  Truffles, Women's Theology  |  No Comments

Love. We’re about to celebrate the beauty, joy, and passion of it tomorrow – or depending on your relationship status, perhaps that’s not on the agenda. But with Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, it’s timely to ask, what exactly is “love” anyway?

The true definition of love in our culture is hard to pin down. We often “know” what it is based on what’s shown in movies, sung about in songs, or nowadays, portrayed in news feeds and friends’ photo albums. This week in particular, the love of our culture revolves around strong feelings and desires, red roses, rich chocolates, all delivered …

Teaching the Bible: A Suggested Model

January 17, 2013  |  Listens, Women's Theology  |  1 Comment

I’m prepping for a conference I’m teaching at through Riv this March (the 16th, save the date!), and found this talk by Jenny Salt very helpful as I’m thinking through the teaching.

I’m all about the expository model of teaching, appreciate her points, and love that she models it through an unlikely passage. I’d recommend listening to it in full, but if you’d like to read through the main points, here are my own notes – jotted down quickly while listening, so apologies if something isn’t quite clear or exact.

Speaker: Jenny Salt – Sydney Missionary & Bible College

A Heart Glad with Wine

December 7, 2012  |  Day-to-Day, Truffles  |  2 Comments

He’s coming home!

Just months ago my good friend Bethany was being encouraged by doctors to abort. Today, doctors are handing her her sweet baby boy so she can take him home. Miracle Max. Mighty Max. Mighty miracle Max.

He was born four weeks early, and after a day in the hospital had to be rushed to U of M. I got the message while at my in-laws and felt so much desperation and helplessness for Max, for Beth…God please just save him. My spirit was begging God but I didn’t know the words to say, …
